Greg Morabito | Wed 2:35 am (12 hours ago)
Today Josh Ozersky chats with Stumptown CEO Duane Sorenson, about the future of the coffee world. Duane's thoughts: "Starbucks laid the path. They made people aware. They offered better coffee in their time than was out there. But now there's far more specialty coffee out there today, and there will be even more so five years from now that will give the consumer — Midwest, West Coast, East Coast, wherever — a lot more options than Starbucks." Greg Morabito | Wed 2:00 am (12 hours ago)
Mouthing Off gets some new intel today on Kevin Gillespie's follow up to Atlanta's Woodfire Grill, slated to open later this year. The new restaurant will be a barbecue joint that will roast two whole Berkshire hogs a day, with a rotating menu of sides. Everything will be in limited quantities, and the place will shut down once everything is sold out. The new project will be built inside of an old autobody shop just up the road from Woodfire, and will be named "with Atlanta in mind." [MO] ...

Video Interlude: Marco Pierre White Takes a Bad Job to Teach Kids a Lesson

Greg Morabito | Wed 1:00 am (13 hours ago)
Celebrated British chef (and legendary crankpot) Marco Pierre White started his career as a culinary apprentice. It makes sense then, that a UK non-profit group geared at getting kids to start apprenticeships would use White in an ad that shows what his life could have been like if he never participated in a similar program at a young age. Naturally, Marco would be working in a hamburger-shaped food truck in the middle of a deserted suburban parking lot. White's hilarious UK's National Apprenticeship Service commercial, "What Could Have ...

Crimes Against Drinking : Gallons Of Premium Beer Confiscated In Philly Police Bust

Greg Morabito | Tue 23:45 pm
Like a bad National Lampoon's movie come to life, last weekend more than a dozen armed policemen confiscated over 300 bottles and four kegs of premium microbrews from three Philly-area bars. Although the beer in question was purchased legally by the pub owners, the cops initiated the bust on allegations that the distributors and brewers who sold them the booze never paid the $75 registration per each imported product. Curiously, all three bars involved in the bust were owned by husband and wife team Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft. ...

Greg Morabito | Tue 22:25 pm
An NYC chef is getting a lot of attention these days for serving a rare, artisanal cheese made from his wife's breast milk. The restaurateur, Daniel Angerer of Chelsea's Klee Brasserie (a former Iron Chef competitor), decided to put the stuff on the menu, after several customers learned about it through the restaurant's blog and asked to try it. The breast-milk cheese -- which is paired with Hungarian figs and goes well with Riesling -- is the hit of the menu these days, even if it has attracted its ...

Monday Afternoon Fun Time : The Secret Lives Of Fast Food Mascots Revealed

Greg Morabito | Tue 5:45 am
Ever wondered what your favorite fast food mascots do when they're not filming commercials? The answer is, apparently, lots of hard drugs. Also: group trips to the strip club. Dance music outfit Rad Omen filmed this amazing (very NSFW) video for their song "Rad Anthem" that features Ronald McDonald, The Burger King, Colonel Sanders, Wendy, and Jack partying hard then hitting the streets for one insanely debauched night. The whole shebang is capped off with an early morning trip to a tiny mom and pop burger stand. Enjoy....

In what is proving to be a huge day for Deen family news, Media Bistro reports that Paula's sons, the strapping, polo shirt-loving Jamie and Bobby Deen, are starting their own quarterly cooking magazine called "Deen Bros. Good Cooking." The mag's publisher (who also works with Mama Deen) notes that the glossy will appeal to a "dual audience," and will feature both healthy recipes and "have strong appeal with men." Greg Morabito | Tue 4:30 am
While there were many bizarre moments in last night's Oscars telecast, one of the strangest was the commercial for a new web-based cooking series starring Rocco DiSpirito, Marissa Tomei and the dude from MTV sports, Dan Cortese. The series, "Into The Heart of Italy," is sponsored by Bertolli and features the oddly matched trio wandering around Italy in search of the perfect pasta ingredients. With all of her food TV antics (and stints in Cameron Crowe films), it's easy to forget that Paula Deen got her start as the chef/owner of popular Savannah, GA bistro Lady & Sons. Now, after many years in front of the camera, Deen is returning to the restaurant biz with a brand new spot in Asheville, NC, called "Paula Deen's Kitchen." Obama Endorsed!: The President Stops For Lunch at Mrs. Wilkes’ In Savannah

Greg Morabito | Tue 1:45 am
Last week, after making a speech at Savannah Tech, President Obama swung by area soul food gem Mrs. WIlkes' Dining Room to enjoy a little fried chicken, iced tea, and sweet potatoes with a few local diners. As is standard with these sort of things, the secret service shut the place down to anyone that hadn't already taken a table. Wolfgang Puck files an exclusive hour-by-hour diary of the prep and service of yesterday's Governor's Ball dinner for Esquire. Of note: Wolfie's chef's coat was specially created by Oscar-winning costume designer Jeffrey Kurland for the occasion, only ten vegetarian meals were prepared for the 1,500 person dinner, Puck's teenage son served as his commis all day, and, yes, Wolfgang took time during the busy event to personally congratulate fellow Austrian Christoph Waltz on his Best Supporting Actor win for Inglorious Basterds. Major Marketing Blunders : Denny’s Crosses a Line With Irish Potato Famine Commercial

Greg Morabito | Mon 23:45 pm
After winning over the public with their hilarious screaming chicken Super Bowl commercial, Denny's took a big misstep with another new ad that uses the Irish Potato Famine to promote their unliminted french fry and pancake offer. The commercial —which has been thoroughly scrubbed from the internet—cites the french fry and pancake deal (still valid through the end of the month!) as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the end of the 19th century famine that left more than a million people dead. The commercial initially drew heat ...

Anderson Cooper stopped by the Colicchio & Sons kitchen last week to chat with Tom about the recents reports on the poor state of food safety in the U.S.. The Top Chef host recommends staying away from frozen beef patties where e. coli is potentially ground into the beef before it can be cooked off, and also buying shoulder meat and muscle from a local butcher. While he acknowledges that buying meat this way is definitely more expensive, Tom suggests that it's possible to keep the cost down by eating more ...

Greg Morabito | Fri 23:30 pm
Now that the fate of Ferran Adria's El Bulli has been determined, it seems that Spain's tourism board is capitalizing on El Bulligeddon with a new ad campaign. Yesterday, Spain's ministry of Tourism named Ferran Adria a "tourism ambassador," and created a print ad featuring the chef throwing an apple in the air with the quote "The art here is not only in museums." Spanish tourism dropped nearly 9% last year, and the new campaign wants to boost global interest by emphasizing the Spanish lifestyle. Naturally, with all of ...
