Weekend, Whew :)

Kathy | Mon 4:46 am
Cheers to a lovely and calm weekend.Saturday coffee at Abraço with Lauren, shopping and afternoon cookies. A brand new rabbit fur beret from Barbara Feinman, and late night tapas with P at Alta. Dangerously potent sangria, warm mushroom salad, lamb meatballs, tuna tartare, skirt steak over chimichurri, and a parmesan potato puree. Ricotta fritters, ricotta fritters!! What a city.Sunday coffee at Everyman and lunch at Mercadito with Don. Pineapple in guacamole, who knew! An afternoon of ...

Mitzy came by with macarons…o_O!

Kathy | Sat 5:50 am
I'm sure you have not forgotten about Mitzy, the amazing woman behind Itzy Bitzy Patisserie. She moved back to Indonesia last summer, and along with her left the best macarons in NYC. Well guess what? She came back for a short visit a few weeks back, and we finally meet up yesterday afternoon along with Tina. It has been a long long time since I've seen Mitzy, so you can imagine how lovely it was when the three of ...

Forbidden Planet

Kathy | Thu 3:45 am
Yesterday afternoon I stopped by Forbidden Planet, my neighborhood comic book shop. On the agenda: Betty & Veronica Double Digest #177. They was but one copy remaining and it was pretty beat up with the cover all bent and everything. One of the guys working there offered to check for back stock, but that was all they had left :(So we started talking about Archie comics. Back in November 2009, they had a big window display with HUGE originals of various Archie ...

RBC NYC

Kathy | Fri 0:45 am
Coffee is something I will never give up. It makes for an expensive habit...cortado in the morning, espresso in the afternoon...and before you know it, you've spent the equivalent of a Chanel bag on coffee! Heehee. My office is located right between two very good coffee spots in Tribeca: La Colombe and the recently opened RBC NYC. All my weekday business (weekends are for Abraco, Everyman, and ...

Duck Noodles

Kathy | Mon 12:11 pm
Sorry my posts haven't been more interesting as of late. Work is much enjoyable, but exhausting. And personal life has been topsy-turvy. Excuse me a minute while I look for peace and quiet, time for "life-admin" and a bowl of duck and mushroom noodles from Boky. With the thick egg noodles. Not half as good with any other type of noodles, for sure.Am close to closing some big deals soon...maybe a trip for one ...

Monday Afternoon: Monte Enebro, Gabietou

Kathy | Tue 5:33 am
Monte EnebroLeft work early this afternoon to visit Murray's Cheese. A gchat conversation with Nikki eventually led to murmurs of cheese and macarons, and I just had to abandon my office desk for a baguette and a quarter pound each of Gabietou and Monte Enebro. Heaven! The Gabietou was quietly polished off inside of nearby gelateria, Grom, with a Tom Cat baguette. You wouldn't believe the effort it took to refrain from opening a bottle of olive oil inside the gelateria ...

The New French

Kathy | Thu 4:54 am
After reading Amateur Gourmet's post declaring, "The Best Tuna Sandwich in New York is at The New French" I emailed Zubair, "let's go!" And so we met up, one very rainy Sunday. The New French was fairly quiet during peak brunch hours...calm and pleasant :)The sandwich is a deal at $10, and comes with a crazy mountain of crisp fries, they practically bury the sandwich! "Fresh ...

Marea

Kathy | Mon 7:37 am
Shots from last Friday's dinner with John.We did the chef's tasting...food was lovely, company was great, but service was quite awful. Disorganized, forgetful, and at times, downright rude. Upon finishing our last savoury course, we were handed a dessert menu. I returned it to the waiter, "we're having the tasting.""Yes, but you pick the dessert.""Oh."So we perused the menu, selecting a dessert.Another waiter came by minutes later, and removed our menus."Oh actually, you don't pick the dessert.""But...we don't?""Your dessert is coming soon..." and ...

Oahu Starbucks: Oatcakes

Kathy | Fri 2:18 am
In 2006 I made a post about Oatcakes found Oahu Starbucks. They are wonderful.A few things about these oatcakes (and why pastries at the Oahu Starbucks are much better than those on the mainland):- The pastries are baked locally, by the Honolulu Baking Co.- Locals are so addicted to these oatcakes that Betty Shimabukuro over at the Star Bulletin did an article on how to recreate them...- ...actually, make that two articles!- Oatcakes: ugly as hell but so tasty.- about 500 calories apieceRecently, I received an email from ...

Punahou/Hawai’i Reunion

Kathy | Wed 4:32 am
photo from ShannJust attended a Punahou/Hawai'i reunion at the Marriott (Times Square location) this past weekend. I'm always amazed by how many Hawai'i people there are in this city. The gathering was a breakfast buffet consisting of rice, eggs, and Portuguese sausage. The Portuguese sausage was flown in from Hawai'i!! How cool is that? And they even passed around shoyu bottles! I think there were only a few bottles so it had to slowly make way from table to ...

Back in NYC, Spotted Pig with Kathryn

Kathy | Thu 12:49 pm
Thank you for all the comments on the last post!! ^_^ It's a shame I cannot teleport between NYC and Hawai'i...how delicious would that life be??I've been taking photos less frequently since I got back to NYC, trying to wean myself from this "addiction". First it pained me to let meals go to "waste" by not having photographic evidence...but now, it's sort of nice to just oooh over a dish and dive in, without pulling out the dslr and snapping away. However, I do get occasional pangs from non-camera-use-remorse ...last night I had dinner with ...

At the bar with the super wonderful and sweet Farida. Lewers Lounge at the Halekulani. A few cocktails, and out comes a plethora of sweets. Lychee sorbet, chocolate cheesecake, chocolate souffle and vanilla bean ice cream. The best part were these mini lilikoi puffs that arrived at the end of the night. Little nibbles of the sweet sort, bursting with local fruit and cream. People on the mainland might be more accustomed to the name passion fruit in place ...
